What is an avox?

An avox is a person in the fictional world of Panem in "The Hunger Games" trilogy by Suzanne Collins who has had their tongue cut out as punishment for their defiance or attempted rebellion against the Capitol. Avoxes are essentially servants to the Capitol, performing menial tasks and serving as reminders to others of the consequences of disobedience.

Avoxes typically wear a red uniform and are easily identifiable by their lack of ability to speak. They communicate through gestures, writing, or sign language, if they are able to do so.

The term "avox" comes from the Latin word for "voiceless," reflecting the silenced nature of these individuals in society. Despite their servitude, avoxes are often viewed with sympathy and intrigue by other residents of Panem, as their presence serves as a reminder of the oppressive regime of the Capitol.
